🎻 Instruments

The objects themselves, from the violin to the sackbut.

About these words

An instrument is a machine for turning effort into air pressure. That is the whole trick. Everything else is detail: whether you scrape it, strike it, blow through it or pluck at it, the job is always to push the air around in an organised way.

Bee Sharp recognises instruments from every family and, more usefully for a word game, from every era. The orchestra supplies the obvious ones. The violin, the cello, the oboe, the bassoon, the timpani. These are the instruments that survived, standardised and mass produced, and their names are so familiar that they barely register as vocabulary.

The more interesting entries are the ones that did not survive. The sackbut was the trombone's ancestor, with a narrower bore and a softer voice, and it was played across Europe for two hundred years before the name fell out of use. The shawm was a double reed instrument loud enough to be played outdoors, and it is the reason the oboe exists. The serpent was exactly what it sounds like, a bass wind instrument built in a long S curve because a straight one would have been unplayable by anything with human arms.

Then there are the instruments that never went near a European orchestra. The koto and the sitar. The balalaika. The bouzouki. The tabla and the tambura. The veena and the sarod. The kora's cousins across West Africa. These arrived in English one at a time, each carried in by a musician or a recording or a colonial encounter, and English simply kept them as it found them.

A few entries here are not instruments at all but parts of them. The fret and the fretboard. The plectrum and the pick. The valve, the reed, the pedal. These are worth knowing for a very practical reason: they are short, they use common letters, and they turn up in Bee Sharp far more often than a bassoon ever will.

How this plays in Bee Sharp

Instrument names are the trap of this category. They feel like the most obviously musical words in the game, so players hunt for them, but most of the famous ones are hopeless in practice. A trombone needs a T, an R, an O, an M, a B, an N and an E, and it needs the puzzle to hand you almost all of them at once.

The instrument words that actually earn you points are the small ones, made from letters that appear constantly.

Of the 94 words in this category, 65 (69%) can be played in at least one of the 3,660 puzzles scheduled between 2026 and 2036. The remaining 29 never get a chance.

The most reliable is reed, playable in 294 puzzles. The rarest that appears at all is trombone, playable in just 1 puzzle.
