About these words
Every other category in Bee Sharp has centuries behind it. This one is barely a hundred years old, and most of it arrived in the last seventy.
Before recording, music was an event. It happened once, in a room, and then it was gone. Recording turned it into an object, and an object can be edited. That single change created an entire profession, and the profession needed words.
Some were borrowed from electrical engineering and kept their meanings. Gain, filter, gate, limiter, compressor, monitor. A compressor squashes the gap between the loudest and quietest parts of a signal, which is why modern records sound consistent at low volume. A limiter is a compressor with its mind made up.
Others describe things that only exist because of tape. Overdub means recording a new part on top of an existing one, which was impossible until multitrack machines arrived in the 1950s. A loop was originally a physical loop of tape, spliced end to end so it played forever. Reverb was created by putting a speaker and a microphone at opposite ends of a tiled room. Delay was tape delay, produced by the gap between the record head and the playback head.
And some are named after nothing at all. A flanger produces its sound by very slightly slowing one of two identical signals, and it is called that because engineers used to achieve the effect by resting a finger on the flange of a tape reel. The word is a description of a hand gesture that has not been necessary since about 1975.
The equipment kept its vocabulary even after the equipment disappeared. Software recreates tape, valves and tiled rooms, and calls them all by the names of objects that no longer need to exist.
The numbers
How this plays in Bee Sharp
Studio words are quietly one of the better categories to hunt in, because engineering vocabulary favours short, blunt, consonant heavy words. Gain, gate, tape, loop, track, sync, tone.
They are also words most players never think to try, because they do not feel musical in the way a violin does.
Of the 54 words in this category, 38 (70%) can be played in at least one of the 3,660 puzzles scheduled between 2026 and 2036. The remaining 16 never get a chance.
The most reliable is gain, playable in 109 puzzles. The rarest that appears at all is volume, playable in just 1 puzzle.
